I can watch Love Actually, Something’s Gotta Give and When Harry Met Sally many times, and always cry. Not to mention Fried Green Tomatoes, one of my top 10 of all time. The movie has it all, including Mary-Louise Parker. (yes, how could you Billy!)

I know that all these movies were left out from Oprah’s “The Top 20 All-Time Chick Flicks” (yes, how could you Oprah!) but I call that just an effort to change the pre-conceived idea on the quality of chick flicks-I have nothing to hide. I love chick flicks “just as they are“. And if that makes me a bad person, so be it.

Leaving the tragic side aside, who wouldn’t want to have a beach house in the Hamptons where you write witty plays, meet a beautiful Portuguese girl and fall in love with her-or a handsome Prime Minister (yes, how can I, liking Hugh Grant!), or just hang out with your best friend, making Fried Green Tomatoes?

My filmmaking career was short, but I enjoyed every moment of it.

It all started with a short assignment given in school, where my team and me decided that we would stay away from the conceptual and abstract creations, and would go to something more real. Voodoo AND hoodoo involved. A Teddy Bear playing Beethoven. Everything in pink. “Keep it Gay” was our motto, and the result was: ” Love Spell, A Story of Revenge”.

The only problem is that we had no idea on how to use all the special effects that were needed to make this opera-prima shine as we wanted, and the result was a soap-opera with some Ed Wood techniques: small fans used to create wind, whispering next to the camera trying to make a spooky background, and some strange looking contortions that were meant to be the death scene.

But for every problem there is a solution, and you don’t need a big studio to create your movie the way you want it to be. There are simple ways to make your own green screen, to make things appear and disappear, and to move the camera without running in circles around the actors.

So, learn everything about filmmaking, and start planning your next production!
