Samuel Gompers, founder of the American Federation of Labor, said: “Labor day differs in every essence from the other holidays of the year in any country. All other holidays are more or less connected with conflicts and battles of man’s prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day, is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect race or nation” This day is to celebrate the achievement of the workers in the eight hour movement; eight hours for work, eight hours for recreation and eight hours for rest. Go out this labor day, and raise your glass to those who toiled 12 hours a day seven days a week to keep American running in the 1800s. As you enjoy your paid holiday remember the workers who took unpaid leave on September 5, 1882 and marched on Union square, for you to have your day of eights.
Enjoy your BBQ this holiday.
