Who’s Afraid of Jack Thompson?
Sep 26th, 2008 by Moshe
Does the name Jack Thompson evoke fear? It should if you’re an avid video gamer.
In my past lie some things I’d rather soon forget, like the year in which – as a result of momentary weakness – I surrendered to the dark side and went to law school. I’m not saying that all lawyers are evil, as that would be exaggerating. It’s the same old story, though, when 97% are giving a bad name to all the others in the bunch.
I do, however, still tend to view issues from the legal perspective, from net neutrality to copyright laws, the long arm of the law usually has something to say about it. Clientelevision’s 5min studio CaseinPoint has a lot to say about the law. Even if you’re not Boston Legal fan, it’s worth hearing.
Although he’s displayed an endearing affection for Batman and his role as defender of the people, Thompson decided that it was time for a “No More Mr. Nice Guy” routine concerning video game violence, and sought legal action against Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar Games, the creators of the mega-successful Grand Theft Auto video game series, among other famous video games he’s rallied against. Check it out here – and be afraid. VERY afraid.
